Conch Season is Happy Season in Belize – The first thing that comes to Belizeans when they hear conch is Ceviche. It’s the most desired appetizer, beer companion, snack or even meal for many. Ceviche could well be a staple food, especially for people of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, who’s Sunday would not be complete without it. So when the season opens on October 1, we also say Happy Season is now open – Let’s Go Conch Fishing!
On the first day of the season, Sanpedranos are up at the crack of dawn and heading out to fish for conch in order for them to supply the restaurants, bars and homes on the island. Those who don’t fish eagerly await for the days batch to arrive and either purchase their fresh conch or head to their favorite locale to have some conch ceviche, or their conch soup or fritters.
But then there is a handful, or maybe even more, of the adventurous type (non-fishermen/women) who cannot wait for the end of the day to get their conch fix. These are the islanders who take their boat (or boatpool) and go conch fishing for themselves. It’s part of being an islander and enjoying island life at its best.
